Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story

The latest arrival from my Netflix cue, I ordered a pizza tonight and sat down to view Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, starring Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller, and Christine Taylor. The 2004 comedy spoofs sports underdog movies with the story of a gym owner under foreclosure, a competing (extra-cheesy) gym owner, and a dodgeball tournament that will bring the underdogs back to solvency.

A fun romp, there are plenty of laugh-out-loud scenes of people getting hit in the face, head, and groin with various flying objects. The humor is frequently juvenile, but fun. The plot’s quite predictable, as you could well imagine. Astonishingly unexpected cameos by Lance Armstrong and Chuck Norris surprised me. What we ended up with is a light-hearted satire on a coming-from-behind sports film that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

My grade: B-.
